About the Caucus

THE PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS of the CDP

The last election cycle in the United States unveiled an unprecedented political landscape in this country, with hundreds of thousands of previously politically naive individuals becoming involved in the process of electing new leadership. What united many of these people was an underlying groundswell of progressive thought and deep concern about the direction of the country under a Conservative Republican administration. With the goal of providing a unified, Progressive voice within the existing State Democratic Party structure, the Progressive Caucus was founded.

  • We believe that all Citizens are entitled to equal rights and equal treatment under the law, and that no one shall be denied these rights because of gender, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or religion.
  • We believe in the separation of Church and State.
  • We believe in lifting all people above the poverty line, including the sick, the disabled, the hungry, the elderly, and the unemployed.
  • We believe that pre-emptive war is wrong and that this country should seek solutions to international threats through diplomatic channels and the United Nations.
  • We believe that every Citizen is entitled to quality health care and that single payer universal health insurance is a right, not a privilege.
  • We believe that the environment is a trust and that we are responsible for preserving it for future generations.
  • We believe in the public school system and that every child should have an opportunity for free, quality education in a safe environment.
  • We believe that the death penalty is wrong.
  • We believe, above all, in the Constitution of the United States and in the right of the People to self-government.

With an emphasis on action, the Progressive Caucus plans to move our Agenda by lobbying for progressive legislation and supporting legislators who write and carry such bills. A few examples of such legislation include Sheila Kuehl’s Single Payer Healthcare bill, SB 840 and Loni Hancock’s Clean Money Bill, AB 583. We are also planning, in collaboration with other progressive groups, local town hall events throughout the state to educate interested Californians about such legislation.

Currently, the Progressive Caucus recognizes the following committees:

  • Civil Rights
  • Environment
  • Reproductive Rights
  • Immigration
  • Criminal Justice
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Media Reform
  • Peace/Anti-War
  • Election Reform
  • International Relations/Foreign Affairs

The Progressive Caucus will work with the Legislative and Party caucuses to pass legislation of interest to communities of color as well as other constituencies who face discrimination and diminished civil and human rights in American society.

We believe that the Platform of the California Democratic Party and its Resolutions should be adhered to and should be the basis of legislation that will promote government for the benefit of the people.
